Symposium (June 27th):Vision of Future Society as Pictured in Linguistic Science and Technology

Recent scientific and technological developments related to language and communication — particularly in the field of information technology and artificial intelligence — have brought dramatic changes into our society. How will they impact future society if the current pace of development continues? How can linguistic researchers contribute to such development? In this symposium, we approach these issues from two perspectives. In the first part of symposium, we look at a neurolinguistic perspective and introduce research supporting patients with “locked-out syndrome (those who lose their speech communication abilities)” due to ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or other diseases, by decoding speech from brain signals and by generating speakers’ own voices by means of speech generation technology. In the second part, we look at a natural language processing perspective. We introduce research using information technologies in preserving and recovering endangered languages and research aiming at multilingualization of machine translation and artificial intelligence. We will conclude the symposium by discussing future perspectives in these fields and possible contributions by linguistic researchers.
